Description
A triumph in Daphne breeding, ‘White Perfume Princess’ is a chance mutation of ‘Pink Perfume Princess. As with her sister, she is the earliest and longest flowering and least fussy of any Daphne, and unlike others, can even be grown in pots. She comes from a cross of Daphne bholua, a winter bloomer with sweet and intense baby powder fragrance, and Daphne odora, a late winter to spring bloomer with its incredible sweet and tropical fragrance. Her size and habit are most like Daphne odora, growing to around 3 feet tall and wide. From mid winter to mid or late spring, abundant clusters of highly fragrant pure white flowers stand out beautifully against the dense mound of elongated, pointed, dark green evergreen leaves. The flowers form not only at the branch tips but down along the stems as well, and they have the unmistakable heavenly Daphne fragrance with sweet citrus undertones. What’s more, White Perfume Princess will grow in almost any soil of average fertility that is well-drained, and sun or shade, though we suggest some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon hours in hot climates of the South.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a dense and rounded mound 3 feet tall and equally as wide, the White Perfume Princess Daphne is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural evergreen hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Unlike many other other Daphne species, this one can be grown and performs well in containers. Plant it near windows, patios, decks, porches and other outdoor living spaces where the wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed. A fine addition to Asian gardens, fragrance gardens, woodland gardens, cottage gardens, and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 2.5 feet apart for solid hedges; 5 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
White Perfume Princess Daphne is very hardy and easy to grow in most any moist to damp but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade in cooler climates and part shade in hot climates. In our Georgia gardens we have it growing in a spot where it gets the morning and evening sun but filtered sun or shade during the hot afternoon hours, which is perfect. Know that it must have a well-drained soil. Daphne do not like wet feet. These plants are quite drought tolerant when established.
