Description
Rhodoleia henryi ‘Scarlet Bells’, commonly called Hong Kong Rose, is one of the most interesting plants we’ve come across in years. Not to be confused with Rhodoleia championii, which isn’t nearly as cold hardy, this species is cold hardy to at least zone 7 and possibly zone 6. Though the dark green evergreen foliage looks somewhat similar to Camellia, the flowers have a distinct look all of their own. From late winter to mid spring clusters of dangling, bell-shaped, vibrant rose-pink to fuchsia-pink flowers are produced in abundance. Truly a site to behold in bloom, this is one of those plants that will have you always looking forward to spring. We suggest planting this rare beauty in part shade as that’s where it looks and performs its best. Morning and/or evening sun and all day filtered sun is fine, but do provide some filtered sun to shade in the afternoon.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 20 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide, ‘Scarlet Bells’ Rhodoleia can be grown as a large shrub or small tree. As a shrub it is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural tall hedge. As she grows taller, lower branches can be removed to form a small evergreen tree that serves well as a focal point specimen in landscape or woodland borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to pink theme gardens, woodland gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 8 feet apart for solid hedge;15 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
‘Scarlet Bells’ Rhodoleia prefers a moist but well-drained and acidic soil moist but well-drained acidic soils of average or better fertility and part shade. Morning and evening sub are fine but do provide some shade or filtered sun during the afternoon hours. Little pruning is required but responds well to it for minor shaping or tree forming.
