‘Russian 26’ Cold Hardy Pomegranate
Punica granatum ‘Russian 26’
Please Note: The original Russian 26 Pomegranate plant was found in the mid-1900’s in Southern Russia. It got it’s name from being the 26th plant in the orchard row, which proved over time to be much more cold hardy than other species in the same orchard. Other growers and retailers may be offering other Russian Pomegranate varieties, however, if it’s not labeled ‘Russian 26’, it’s most likely not the real deal.

Description
The most cold and heat tolerant Pomegranate we’ve ever grown, in our Georgia USDA Zone 8a gardens ‘Russian 26’ has suffered no freeze damage down to 3 degrees F! Based on feedback from our customers over the years, Russian 26 can be safely grown in USDA Hardiness Zones 6a-11. This pomegranate is self-pollinating so you only have to plant one.
But the great attributes don’t stop with cold hardiness…
In spring, your Russian 26 Pomegranate will produce lots of fluorescent orange single flowers that really light up the garden. That said, two plants enhances pollination and increases fruit production. The flowers are followed by large, bright orange-red fruit that are filled with delectable, nutrient-packed, dark red seeds that are amazingly sweet and said to be the sweetest of any Pomegranate!
Russian 26 is a hard seeded pomegranate variety.
Some History
The original Russian 26 Pomegranate plant was found in the mid-1900’s in southern Russia. It got it’s name from being the 26th plant in the orchard row, which proved over time to be much more cold hardy than other species in the same orchard.
NOTE: As with all of our other plants and trees, all of our fruit plants are grown in containers outdoors so they are fully rooted and landscape-ready upon arrival.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing up to 10 feet tall and wide with a naturally rounded shape, the Russian 26 Pomegranate can be grown as a large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form an attractive small tree. Its electric-orange flowers, red fruits, and attractive foliage make the Russian 26 Pomegranate ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in the ornamental landscape. A fine addition to the backyard orchard, tropical look gardens, orange and red theme gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 14 feet or more for space between plants
Growing Preferences
When planted right, and in the right spot Pomegranates are very easy to grow.
Soil Preferences: Though pomegranates will tolerate most any type of average garden soil, as with most other fruit trees, Pomegranate grow best in a deep, loam soil rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant in a well-drained site. Brief periods of flooding won’t cause problems provided the soil is well-draining. If you live in an area that can experience long rainy periods it’s best to plant Pomegranate on raised beds or mounds. The soil pH tolerance for Pomegranate is wide as well. They will grow in moderately acid to moderately alkaline soils that range from 4.5 to 8.2 on the pH scale, so pH usually isn’t a concern.
Sun Preferences: The best and most pomegranate fruits will be produced when plants are growing in full sun. However, pomegranate plants that receive a little shade during the hottest part of summer days will still produce good crops.
PLEASE NOTE
The USDA Plant Hardiness Zones are the standard by which gardeners and growers can determine which plants are most likely to thrive at a specific geographic location. The zones are based on the average annual minimum winter temperature, divided into 10 degree F zones. That said, due to that any specific location can experience an unusually cold winter, where temperatures drop below the typical average indicated in the USDA Zone Plant Hardiness Zones data, the zones are not always 100% accurate. Therefore, in USDA Zones 6 and 7 we suggest providing some winter protection for your Russian 26 Pomegranate tree. A 3 to 4 inch layer of mulch will help protect the roots during winter. Mulch can be thinned to 1 to 2 inches when temperatures warm in spring. Planting your Russian 26 on the east side of a home or in a location where it will be sheltered from north and western winds will also help to provide protection during the cool season.

Just got my pomegranate and promptly planted it in the Garden. It came super fast and it was carefully and securely packaged. Very impressed and happy with my plant. I think it might be a bit small for the 3 gallon, but this is actually not an issue for me because it has been so beautifully pruned that I only had to make a few cuts to get to the three branch shape I am looking for!
Excited to watch it grow :)—————————————————-Thanks for the photo and the kind words and wonderful review! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG

Our 3 gallon Russian 26 pomegranate tree arrived healthy and safe. We just planted it a couple of weeks ago but so far so good. It was a good size for the price. We received the delivery of the Russian 26 Pomegranate tree that we have been so anxious waiting for. Honestly I didn’t expect much, because of past bad experiences from other companies. However, when the package from Wilson Brothers Gardens arrived we opened it immediately and we were wonderfully surprised and very happy. Carefully packed was a big, full, healthy looking bush along with a letter, personally signed invoice, and care instructions. We are excited to plant our new addition.

I ordered two 2 gallon Russian 26 pomegranates from Wilson Bros. They arrived in perfect condition — well packaged in a large sturdy box supported by cardboard. The plants were moist, the soil was in tact, and the plants were undamaged. In addition, the plants were extremely healthy and had obviously been well attended prior to shipment. Also, the plants obviously were obtained from a reputable grower since the species was clearly tagged. My package even shipped well before the estimated ship time. This care in shipping was taken even though the shipping was free — no short cuts taken.
My Wilson Bros. experience contrasts with a shipment which I received from an Amazon supported nursery. The order placed was for Russian 8 pomegranates which Wilson Bros. unfortunately did not stock. The 5 gallon plants were packaged in a flimsy box smaller than the one used for the Wilson Bros. 2 gallon plants, no dividers were used to avoid movement, the containers were crushed, the soil had spilled, the plants were damaged, and the shipping was astronomical. To make matters worse, the Amazon purchased plants were simply tagged as Russian pomegranates. Since there are 6 types of Russian Pomegranates widely available for sale, I can’t verify that I actually received Russian 8 pomegranates regardless of the vendor representations that the plants sold were Russian 8 pomegranates. Comparing the 2 mail order purchasing experiences, I cannot say enough good things about Wilson Bros. I will definitely order from Wilson Bros. again. This nursery is the best!!!!

Tree was well packaged and very healthy. Don’t know if it will ever bear fruit or survive the New Jersey winters, I’m keeping my fingers crossed! Regardless, I’m very pleased with the quality of the tree I received! ————————— WBG Reply: Hi Frank – Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Russian 26 Pomegranate tree and for the compliments. Hope you enjoy it for years to come! The Russian 26 in my own landscape has breezed right through 3 degrees F with no damage to the plant. That said, during the first couple winters, if the temperatures are forecast to drop below 10 degrees it would be a good idea to wrap and tie a blanket around the young tree until temps rise above 10 or 15 degrees. Also add some extra straw or wood mulch on top of the ground around the root system for insulation. Just remember to remove all but a 2-inch thickness of the the mulch in early spring. If it’s been real dry before severe cold temperatures hit soak the ground around the roots with water. This helps to form ice sheaths around the roots that serve as insulation. Keep us posted as to how your Russian 26 does there in Zone 6a of NJ and let us know if there’s ever anything else we can do for you. – Brent | Wilson Bros Gardens
Arrived very healthy and good size. It’s currently inside and doing very well. Already has new growth! Just waiting for snow to melt to plant it. ——————– WBG Reply: Hi Jennifer – Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review. Glad to hear your Russian 26 Pomegranate is leafing out nicely indoors. Even though this is a cold hardy pomegranate, think waiting for the snow to melt before planting it outdoors is a wise decision on your part. If you had planted it in your garden last year the tree would still be dormant now. So, to avoid temperature shock, it’s best to wait until all chances of frost have passed. Wilson Brothers are the BEST. Stay Away From (removed for legal purposes) Nursery. They Charged My Credit Card And sent nothing. After many Phone Calls and E-Mails I still have nothing from Them. The pomegranate trees arrived in good condition and were much larger than expected, delivery was fast, we have planted ours in a protected area since we are at the lower end of the zone but so far plants seem to be doing well. looking forward to spring. ———————– WBG Reply: Thanks so much for your review, Christina. During the first couple years growing the Russian 26 Pomegranate there in OH, which is USDA Zone 6a, it’s probably a good idea to mulch a little heavier and, if temps are forecast to drop way below normal maybe wrap some sheets around the plants for insulation. Came alive and quick. Couldn’t have asked for any better. Thanks
I was a little concerned because didn’t get any notification for a couple of days, but the customer service at Wilson Bros was very attentive and professional – everything followed as they said it will and the plant arrived on time. Packaging was perfect and the tree in excellent condition. They included some very useful instructions about planting and care. We’ll see how it will develop, but for now I’m very satisfied. I will recommend them to anyone and will by again from them. They look trustworthy.
Packaging was very good and the pomegranate bush arrived within 5 days of ordering. A little smallish for a 3 gallon size but it’s winter so no leaves yet. I hope Russian 26 is more cold hardy than the two other types of pomegranates I’ve lost to cold weather over the past two years. Wonderful Pomegranate is not hardy in Chattanooga! If this Russian 26 doesn’t make it I give up!
What else can I say? I haven’t planted it yet, but the tree I just received (3 gallon size) looks amazing. I also need to be sure to give some praise to the customer service team. They have been very friendly and responsive. I would happily recommend this company to others.
I am really satisfied with my purchase. The tree looked really healthy and good roots, fast delivery, packing was impeccable. Matter of fact, packing was done ensuring to protect this healthy plant. I was really impressed. Thank you very much! Meanwhile, my Russian Pomegranate is in our yard being really happy. Thank you so much!————————WBG Reply: Hi Walter, Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Russian 26 Pomegranate we are so glad you are pleased with your purchase and we hope you enjoy it for years to come!
