Description
Introduced in the early 1900’s by the famous camellia breeder Kosaku Sawada, ‘Gulf Pride’ is an old favorite but now rare Southern Indica Azalea treasured and adored for its abundant and large fragrant lavender flowers produced in spring. The upper petal is adorned with reddish freckles. Sawada discovered and propagated this lovely and charming selection from a branch sport then naming it after the Gulf region of Alabama he resided in. Growing 5 to 6 feet tall and wide over time, plant this one near patios, decks and other outdoor living spaces where the pretty flowers and delightful fragrance can be enjoyed. Gulf Pride is one of those flowering shrubs that throughout the year will always have you eagerly anticipating the arrival of spring!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a rounded mounded 5 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide over time, the Gulf Pride Azalea is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a colorful and fragrant natural hedge in mostly sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to Azalea gardens, purple theme gardens and cottage gardens.
Spacing: 4 feet apart for solid hedges; 7 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences
Southern Indica Azaleas are very easy to grow. They prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter and mostly sun to part shade. That said, we think they perform and look their best with a little shade or filtered sunlight during the hottest mid afternoon hours. Established plants have good drought tolerance.
