Description
Truly a winter wonder, ‘Fragrant Snow’ is a very rare Japanese Flowering Apricot cultivar adored for her spectacular and abundant display of highly fragrant, showy double white blossoms that nearly cover the naked stems in mid winter. The tree in our Zone 8a gardens blooms in January. A site to behold when little to nothing else is blooming in the gardens! Our tree is maybe 15 feet tall and 10 to 12 feet wide after 10 years and might reach 20 feet or so at maturity. One of those rare beauties to delight the senses that deserves a spot in every garden where it will grow. USDA Zones 6a to 9b.
This magnificent tree is a larval host plant to the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly. You may see three flights from February through November in the deep South and two flights from May to September in the north.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 20 tall and 10 to 15 feet wide, the ‘Fragrant Snow’ Japanese Flowering Apricot is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller garden spaces or in groupings or rows in larger landscape borders. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, white theme gardens, butterfly gardens, bird gardens and cottage gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Japanese Flowering Apricot is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained acidic soil of average fertility and full sun to light shade. Moderate drought tolerance when established. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. No pruning is necessary however responds well to it for size control and shaping purposes.

I have been looking for this plant for years without success. Many nurseries confuse any flowering plum with the true Japanese mume, which is fragrant as it opens in very early Spring and bears little sour plums in Autumn. The plant arrived in great condition and the way it was packed showed that this company knows what it is doing! The pot was secured tightly in the box and the plant had a layer of damp paper and tape to keep the soil from spilling. I live in the farthest northwest corner of the country so it was a long journey but the plant arrived in great shape.—————————————–Wow! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
