Description
Certain to be an eye pleaser, the Blue Surprise Lawson Cypress forms an upright narrow spire of impeccable, intense steel blue foliage that will not go unnoticed in the landscape! Attractive year round, the dense foliage emerges a silvery blue transition to a darker grey blue in summer then taking on a purplish cast during the colder winter months. Adding maybe 6 inches in height per year and reaching maybe 6 to 8 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide at the base when all grown up, Blue Surprise is a perfect fit for smaller garden spaces or to fill a narrow spot. It puts an exclamation point on any garden or home foundation planting. Excellent in rock gardens. Groupings of three are excellent where space allows or two can be used to frame an entrance. No pruning necessary.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and 2 to 2.5 feet wide over time, the Blue Surprise Lawson Cypress is ideal for use as vertical accent or focal point specimen in smaller garden spaces. It is excellent for use as an accent or to frame an entrance in home foundation plantings. Where space allows, spaced groupings of three are nice. Also a fine solo or centerpiece in containers combined with other plants that like sun and a well-drained soil. A fine addition to rock gardens, conifer gardens, blue theme gardens and Asian or Zen gardens.
Growing Preferences
Blue Surprise Lawson Cypress is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Whether growing in the ground or in pots, constantly soggy soil or standing water is problematic, so plant in a well-drained site or pot and avoid overwatering. Provide only enough water to keep the soil damp to moist. Established plants are quite drought tolerant and will only require an occasional drink during prolonged periods of drought. Maintenance is minimal. No pruning required except to snip a rare, stray branch tip that is spoiling the shape of the plant.
